5 Alpha Reductase
5 Alpha Reductase (5-A-R) is an enzyme produced by your prostate, epididymis, seminal vesicles and skin that converts testosterone into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. It contains 2 isoenzymes which are classified as steroid 5 alpha reductase 1 and 2. DHT causes prostate growth and hair loss while also being the substance that dictates a man's behavioral characteristics. The more 5-A-R produced by your body, the faster you are likely to lose your hair. Several vitamins, herbs and other natural substances are said to act as 5-A-R inhibitors. Some examples may include: Saw Palmetto Beta Sitosterol Green Tea Extract L-lysine
Many hair restoration products will use some or all of these ingredients but they can also be purchased as individual supplements. The inhibition of 5-A-R will reduce the production of DHT and increase levels of testosterone which is good news for men but the risk of developing gynecomastia is something to be discussed with your health care professional.
5 alpha reductase medication, such as Finasteride and Dutasteride, are often prescribed to patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Products such as Finasteride inhibit only one of the isoenzymes (type 2) while Dutasteride, commercially known as Avodart, inhibits both forms. Remember to discuss any drug or supplementation program with your health care professional to avoid possible complications with medicine that you may currently be taking.
