How Biotin Affects Hair Loss

Biotin is a B-complex vitamin which is purported to have positive effects when it comes to stopping hair loss.

Among it's list of important functions within the human body are:

- aiding the production of fatty acids
- metabolism of fats and amino acids
- transfer of carbon dioxide
- helps maintain steady blood sugar levels

It's highest concentration in everyday foods is found in milk, liver, egg yolks and some vegetables.

Although there are no scientific studies proving it's efficacy as a hair restorative product, hair loss is one main indicator of a deficiency.

The Daily Value (DV) recommendation is between 30 mcg and 300 mcg depending on the source of information your reading at the time.

It is interesting to note that lower levels of this B complex vitamin are found in alcoholics and patients who have had partial gastrectomy, burn patients, epileptics, the elderly and athletes.

On a more exciting note, preliminary studies in animals and people indicate that biotin may help improve blood glucose control particularly in people with type 2 diabetes.

Some sources also maintain that this vitamin is better utilized as a dietary supplement rather than a topical application as it is not absorbed very well through skin.
