Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss is similar to male hair loss but different enough to warrant unique consideration and treatments.

Stress alopecia or telogen effluvium is when a majority of hair follicles enter the telogen stage (rest stage following the growth phase) within a short time frame. Several circumstances may precede the exodus of tresses such as a drop in hormone levels, birth of a baby, cessation of birth control, high fever, trauma of any kind, improper dieting practices, thyroid problems, disease, medical treatment such as chemotherapy or pharmaceuticals and even radiation therapy.

Some medicines such as blood thinners may also cause hair loss in women but the hair will likely grow back once the medicine is no longer taken. In many cases your health care professional may be able to prescribe an alternative medicine that doesn't cause hair loss.

Diseases such as diabetes and lupus can also cause hair loss. As a matter of fact, your hair loss may actually show up as a symptom of the disease. For this reason, you should consult your health care professional if you experience sudden hair loss in order to determine it's cause.

Traction alopecia is caused when a person wears their hair in such a style that requires high tension such as pigtails or cornrows. Constant tension may cause scarring on the scalp tissue which will then no longer be able to support healthy hair growth.

Female hair loss may also be caused by alopecia areata. This is where your hair begins to fall out from only specific spots on your scalp giving a patchy appearance. It is more common in people who have a family history of this problem and may be even more prominent in families with a history of autoimmune diseases. Alopecia totalis is the technical term used when all of your hair has fallen out.

While there are several options available to men for hair treatments there are fewer for women. You may wish to investigate Provillus for Women or Sephren as a treatment option for female hair loss.

Keep in mind that there are hair restoration drugs such as Finasteride that should never be taken by women. As a matter of fact it is recommended that women not even come into contact with Finasteride at all!

For help in combating these issues we will investigate products specifically aimed at preventing and treating female hair loss.

This video is a little hard to watch. It really gets the point across about how devastating a woman's hair loss problem can be.

This next video shows the courage of a beautiful young lady who is refusing to be defined by her alopecia but rather instilling courage, confidence and self esteem in others!
