Finasteride and Hair Loss

Finasteride is marketed By Merck under the name Propecia.

It acts as an anti-androgen which inhibits 5-alpha reductase production thus stopping the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

It is also sometimes used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.

Side effects may include depression, erectile dysfunction and gynecomastia or breast gland enlargement. Women should avoid taking this product as it is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Pregnant women should avoid touching the tablets because the drug can be absorbed through the skin.

On the positive side, this product has proven in clinical studies to re-grow hair with about 42% - 48% success rate but only as long as the drug continues to be taken. Due to possible side effects, this product seems to be riskier than other options currently available.
